The long-term goal of this project: Development of educational and eco-friendly tourism in the area. Maintenance of one of the most popular trails on lake Baikal.
Project scope of work: The project tasks will include clearing the trail corridor, building new sections, setting up resting points, and installing signs and trail markings.
There will be a crew leader who helps manage all the volunteers at the work-site. She or he will be assisted by an interpreter, who will not only ensure smooth communication amongst all of the participants, but also will help run our after-hours cultural programs for the group.
The average working day is six hours, with a break for lunch. The crew leader can change the daily schedule depending on the weather and the condition of the group.
Living conditions and meals: Volunteers will be setting up a stationary camp on the shore of Baikal in Yemelyanikha creek valley.
The crew leader will set up a work schedule, as well as a schedule for meal and campfire preparation amongst all the crew members. For those interested in perusing a typical menu at our camps, please look at our sample menu.
GBT will provide all food for the whole project, and will also supply a full inventory of trail-building tools, other equipment, two-person tents, etc.
There will be no hot showers at the site, but it will be possible to heat up enough water to bathe camping-style or you might choose to refresh yourself into the waters of lake Baikal.
Days off: In the first half of the project volunteers will hike to Cherskogo Stone where they can see the source of Angara river. At the end of the project there will be a banya in Bolshiye Koty and a one day hike to enjoy a picturesque view from Skriper cliff in case of good weather and group condition.
Physical challenges during the project: A 6 km (~4 miles) long hike along the trail from the village of Listvyanka to Yemelyanikha creek valley is expected on the first day of the project. Volunteers will hike 15 km (~9 miles) to the village of Bolshie Koty at the end of the project.
Volunteers will cover a distance of 2-3 km (~1,5 miles) along the trail and will use work tools – shovels, pickaxes, will carry logs, stones. Other types of physical activity are also included.
Please note that you will be expected to hike in and out of the site with your own backpacks, carrying your personal belongings along with all of our trail tools and food items. Also, as a part of the project, volunteers will take part in the maintenance of the camp.
