Trail to Frolikha lake (project is full)

Trail to Frolikha lake (Project is full)

Timeline for this project: August 1-14, 2018 (14 days)

Project languages: Russian, English

Project location: Russia, Republic of Buryatia, Barguzinski Nature Reserve, Frolikha lake

The long-term goal of this project: Development of ecological tourism through hiking trails maintaining in the surroundings of Frolikha lake.

Work-load on the project: Volunteers will have to equip a trail along the lake with the necessary structures and features. The building of the trail will include the clearing of a new trail corridor, ground digging and building of new structures.

The schedule each day will be flexible according to weather conditions and the make-up of the crew. Typically, the workdays along the trail last about six hours with a long break for lunch in between.

Living conditions and meals: Our volunteers will be setting up a stationary camp by Frolikha lake. It will take about 7 kilometres of walk with backpacks to reach the lake from Ayaya bay. During the project the volunteers will have to transfer the whole stationary camp from one shore of the lake to the other one time.

Our crew leaders will work with volunteers to set up a work schedule, as well as a schedule for meal and campfire preparation amongst all the crew members. GBT will bring all food items for the full two weeks of meals, and will also supply a full inventory of trail-building tools, other equipment, two-person tents, etc.

Please note that each participant will be asked to carry their own belongings, along with a share of tools, equipment, and food products over to the project site – the distance of 7 km (5 miles). Please note that there will be no hot showers at the site, but it will be possible to heat up enough water to bathe camping-style or you might choose to take a bath in the refreshingly waters of lake Baikal.

This project can`t literally be called a Baikal shoreline project, since the permanent camp will be set up some 7 km from the lake. Nevertheless, this should not be seen as a disadvantage for our volunteers since the camp will be set up in a charming glade, away from the predominant Baikal winds, on the bank of the picturesque Frolikha lake.

Weekend activities: For two weeks the participants will live and work together on the shores of a beautiful mountain lake. The location of the camp is in a great recreational place. You can enjoy breathtaking sunsets, take walks along the shores of the lake, dive into the deep waters of the lake after the working day or just enjoy the wonderful nature. And then you will spend the evenings enjoying conversations around the campfire with your new friends with whom you will spend the next two weeks on an unforgettable adventure.

Physical challenges during the project: Every day we will be hiking a mile to the trail site, often carrying our trail-building tools along the way (mostly shovels and pickaxes). We will also need to move some heavy logs and rocks and take on other similarly laborious tasks. Please note that you will be expected to hike in and out of the site with your own backpacks, carrying your personal belongings along with all of trail tools and food items from Ayaya bay to lake Frolikha.

Please note that you should plan to bring a large backpack with you, one that can hold the equivalent of 70 litres in volume. You should also bring a jacket for the prevailing windy and damp weather, along with a warm sweater and durable pants. Please also bring some very sturdy shoes, ones that are waterproof (many places along the trail can be muddy). We strongly suggest that you refer to our List of required equipment for you to bring to our project site.

Travel expenses and fees: This trail project’s starting point is the city of Severobaikalsk. We ask that all volunteers gather in Severobaikalsk one day prior to the start of the project, on July 31th. From there volunteers will reach Niszheangarsk by a private bus. From Nizheangarsk they will use free transport offered by Barguzinsky reserve to Ayaya bay.
