Building links

Northern Baikal is the most preserved part of Lake Baikal's Unique nature. There are huge territories and has a small population. In winter Baikal has a special colour typical of a true Siberian winter. In that time there is no hard frost, but a lot of bright sun and pure white snow which is paradise for skiers. Volunteers will develop a booklet which will be a great support for whose, who would like to travel in the North Baikal. They will compose the descriptions of existing trails to put them into the booklet. Project work will also include a lay out, developing a design and a content of the booklet with the help of the brainstorm and translation some information into English.

Baikal under ice

The project will take place in the Barguzinskii Bay in the nearby town of Ust-Barguzin, Buryatia, Russia.  This is located not far from the peninsula Svyatoi Nos (or “Holy Nose”).  On this project, we will carry out ecological activities with children from the eco-center “Podlemore,” prepare trail banners, signs, and markers for the trail  from Maksimikha to Ust-Barguzin (32 km long), learn how to build ice structures and then build an expreimental ice village on Baikal, including a house, sculptures, slides, etc.  We will also prepare for and celebrate the holiday “Water Day” with the children from the eco-center “Podlemore.”

 In the Jungles of Khamar-Daban - 1

The Baikalskiy National Natural Reserve is situated in the southern part of Lake Baikal. In 1986, Baikalskiy gained the status of a Biosphere Reserve and was recognized by UNESCO as part of the international network of biosphere reserves which represent the most important types of the world’s ecosystems. In partnership with local schools, the Reserve staff uses eco-trails to take visitors on tours to see the local flora and fauna. The trail is one of two reserve trails allowing organized groups, accompanied by Reserve staff, to experience the wildlands here. The Reserve’s future plans include the addition of 15 kilometers of educational eco-trails. (There are currently 7 km of existing trail) GBT volunteers will take part in the construction of these new trails and the improvement of existing trails.

The Land of Baikal’s Taiga - 1

This trail lies within Pribaikalskiy National Park, one of GBT’s closest partners. The park comprises a section of coastline, as well as the famous Olkhon Island. Our trail runs mostly along the coast between the villages of Listvyanka and Bolshie Koty and goes all the way to the village of Bolshoe Goloustnoe (60 km north), providing spectacular views of the lake and its opposite shores, as well as a closer look at the plant life that abounds in the forests and cliff tops of the park. The main goal of this project is the construction of a safe trail between the picturesque villages of Listvyanka, one of the most popular tourist destinations on Baikal, and Bolshoe Goloustnoe, a Buryat village some 60 km to the north.

Frolikha Lake

The campsite is in the vicinity of Ayaya Bay (the "very, very beautiful bay"). One of the highlights of the whole trail, Ayaya Bay, is the deepest and coldest bay at Lake Baikal. To get there, you must cope with the most difficult part of the entire trail. Bouldering across huge ragged rocks directly above, sometimes almost in the lake, you will need sure footedness, concentration, time and patience. In exchange you will soon get to one of the most beautiful places at Lake Baikal with a most impressive panorama, a wonderful sandy beach and the chance to make a detour to Lake Frolikha, which is (at least) a 6 km-hike into the mountains. This lake is not only renowned for its unique position amidst beautiful scenery, but also for its endemic biodiversity. Some species to be found have not changed since the ice age, e.g. the Davatshan fish
