How it began…
The idea for the creation of the Great Baikal Trail Youth Club was generated for several reasons. GBT volunteers come from all different occupations and interests. In 2003, for the coordination of their activities within the organization, it was decided to hold weekly meetings to be able to share news and discuss projects. We are glad to see both our old and new friends in the GBT Youth Club.
What we are doing at the club meetings
Every week, we have a tea meeting in GBT office where all participants share with each other GBT’s news and other interesting information.
Sometimes representatives from other organizations visit our club and tell us about their projects.
Every Tuesday for fans of movies and the English language, “English Language Movie Night” is held in the GBT office. You always can visit our webpages on the website vkontakte.ru (http://vk.com/gbt_group) or facebook (http://www.facebook.com/greatbaikaltrail) to see what movie will be shown on the upcoming Tuesday and your welcome to come to the movie.
What we are engaged in within a year in our club
In the winter volunteers work with children of Baikal’s rural districts. We conduct interactive outdoor classes talking about environmental protection and encourage the care of the shore’s native nature. Interactive classes are conducted as a play, and it's very engrossing!
GBT often organizes hikes on the ice of Lake Baikal, different ecological exhibitions, conferences and international workshops in partnership with foreign environmental organizations. Also The GBT Youth Club regularly takes part in environmental actions such as Baikaltour, Zimniada, The Day of Lake Baikal, etc. Newcomers to our club often complete GBT courses on crew leadership and interpreting, and become leaders of our trail building summer projects.
As a bonus, volunteers often have the opportunity to participate in the international programs of organizations such as EarthCorps (Seattle), Open World Leadership Center, etc.
How to join us
GBT Club members meet every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. In the summer, it time for our volunteer projects on Baikal, so we don’t meet. The first club meeting after the eventful summer is conducted in beginning of September, where members compare notes about summer volunteer projects.
If you have any projects that you want to implement, but don’t know how or where it is possible to do so, or if you wish to take part in an international program our volunteers will be glad to help you! Furthermore, you can rent our office, if it is necessary for your project.
GBT Club is…
- making new friends and meeting interesting people;
- the opportunity to learn more information about our organization;
- involvement in international programs and many other things!
