Trial Trail

Timeline for this project: July 6 – July 19, 2016 (14 days)

Project Location: Russia, Republic of Buryatia, Zabaikalski National Park, Svyatoy Nos peninsula

The long term goal of this project: The development of tourism. At the moment the trail is just a steep climb. The aim is to create a more comfortable track for the visitors with an average level of preparation.

Work-load on the project: Our volunteers will have to start the construction of a new section of trail - switchbacks. The construction of the new trail includes clearing the corridors, excavating the soil and building structures.
The schedule each day will be flexible according to weather conditions and the make-up of the crew. Typically, our workdays along the trail last about six hours with a long break for lunch in between.

Be aware, that sometimes you will have nutrisious snack on the trail instead of lunch because working place is located far away from the camp.

Living conditions and meals: Our volunteers will be setting up a stationary camp along Barguzin Bay in Svyatoy Nos peninsula.
Our crew leader will work with volunteers to set up a work schedule, as well as a schedule for meal and campfire preparation amongst all the crew members. GBT will bring all food items for the full two weeks of meals, and will also supply a full inventory of trail-building tools, other equipment, two-person tents, etc.
There will be no hot showers at the site, but it will be possible to heat up enough water to bathe camping-style or you might choose to refresh yourself into the waters of lake Baikal. For those interested in perusing a typical menu at our camps, please look at our sample menu.

Weekend activities: If the group is in good physical conditions, they can climb to Svyatoy Nos Plateau. At the end of the project in case of favourable weather conditions it is possible to visit the seal rookeries in Ushkanye Islands or the thermal springs of Zmeevyi Bay.

Physical challenges during the project: Volunteers will cover a distance of 5 km along the trail and will use work tools - shovels, pickaxes, will carry logs, stones. Other types of physical activity are also included. Please note that you will be expected to hike in and out of the site with your own backpacks, carrying your personal belongings along with all of our trail tools and food items. Also, as a part of the project, our volunteers will take part in the maintenance of the camp.

Please note that you should plan to bring a large backpack with you, one that can hold the equivalent of 70 litres in volume. You should also bring a jacket for the prevailing windy and damp weather, along with a warm sweater and durable pants. Please also bring some very sturdy shoes, ones that are mostly waterproof (many places along the trail can be muddy). We strongly suggest that you refer to our list of required equipment for you to bring to our project site.

Travel expenses and fees: This trail project's starting point is in the village of Ust’-Barguzin. We ask that all volunteers gather in the city of Ulan-Ude one day prior to the start of the project, on July 5th. There are mini-buses that go to the village of Ust’-Barguzin from Ulan-Ude. The cost of a one-way trip on this bus will be 1200 rubles (baggage included). From the village of Ust’-Barguzin the volunteers will be transferred for free on the motor vehicles of Zapovedny Podlemore to the natural landmark of Glinkа on Svyatoy Nos peninsula.

Please be sure to carefully read the FAQ, the List of Necessary Equipment, and Information concerning ticks.
